QUOTED INSPIRATION

Daily Prompt: Quote Me

Do you have a favorite quote that you return to again and again? What is it, and why does it move you?

I don’t often quote but when I do it is to make a point, or a quote says something way better than I ever could.  I love quoting C.S. Lewis,  Sylvia Plath and Stephen Chbosky mainly because I feel their spirits deeply when I read their words.  Quotes are short stories that nearly everyone can relate too.   Before I started blogging I used to tell one sentence stories all the time on my FaceBook account.  Quotes prove you don’t have to be wordy to inspire and motivate!  Here are a few of my favorites and then of course a poem this prompt inspired!

“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in life. And I am horribly limited.” ~Sylvia Plath

“If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed.” ~Sylvia Plath

“And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter— they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long.” ~Sylvia Plath

So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be. ~ Stephen Chbosky

“It’s much easier to not know things sometimes. Things change and friends leave. And life doesn’t stop for anybody. I wanted to laugh. Or maybe get mad. Or maybe shrug at how strange everybody was, especially me. I think the idea is that every person has to live for his or her own life and than make the choice to share it with other people. You can’t just sit their and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can’t. You have to do things. I’m going to do what I want to do. I’m going to be who I really am. And I’m going to figure out what that is. And we could all sit around and wonder and feel bad about each other and blame a lot of people for what they did or didn’t do or what they didn’t know. I don’t know. I guess there could always be someone to blame. It’s just different. Maybe it’s good to put things in perspective, but sometimes, I think that the only perspective is to really be there. Because it’s okay to feel things. I was really there. And that was enough to make me feel infinite. I feel infinite.” ~ Stephen Chbosky

“Do not waste time bothering whether you “love” your neighbor; act as if you did.As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone you will presently come to love him.” ~ C.S. Lewis

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” ~ C.S. Lewis

“What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it.” ~ C.S. Lewis

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” ~ C.S. Lewis

“There is nothing like puking with somebody to make you into old friends.” ~ Sylvia Plath

“I like people too much or not at all. I’ve got to go down deep, to fall into people, to really know them.” ~ Sylvia Plath

“I have never found anybody who could stand to accept the daily demonstrative love I feel in me, and give back as good as I give.” ~ Sylvia Plath

Words hold me captive

In the stories I live in

They hold me prisoner

Lacing up my eyes

Binding them in straight-jackets

I forget the world around me

I forget the world in my head

The only world I can see

Are in the worlds typeset before me

And when the story ends

Released from the sentences

That ensnared me

I am given new inspiration

To live the reality around me

  1. Truer words have never been written my dear. And the quote, It’s much easier to not know things…. hit me right in my heart. It echoes in my soul and makes it hard to breathe. Oh Hasty….

  2. I like the many quote and your thoughts. I believe our world is different. 30 years ago I sat with musicians, writer’s and stranger. Play games of chess and talks of life and dreams. People are moving too fast. Using phones to communicate. I miss the days when we allowed opportunities for friendship and good conversation to happen daily. Thank you for the interesting thoughts..

  5. I love C.S. Lewis ! I also enjoy Selwyn Hughes … and Jesus if I’m being honest here. I’m a word junkie! I collect so many quotes, pictures of quotes, I love to read, to write, to talk 😉 !! One quote that always comes to mind though is by C.S. Lewis “Whatever is not eternal, is eternally useless”. I might not have the words bang on … but I love that line of reasoning, I can apply it to myself daily, especially in life and love 🙂

  7. ” You can’t just sit there and put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can’t. You have to do things. ”
Out of all of the quotes above, this really hit me between the eyes. Don’t exactly know why … yet ! I’m sure it has entered my subconscious now and will percolate there for a while. And I will somehow live by it in the future.
I’ve read C.S.Lewis over the years. Mere Christianity and Surprised by Joy both come to mind, but The Chronicles of Narnia was by far my favourite. Even as an adult !
Sylvia Plath I knew of, but had never read ’til my son had to study her for his Leaving Certificate. I read one of the poems he was studying, Daddy, and immediately devoured as much of her poetry as I could.
Your own poem echoes some of what I feel when I am writing something, usually a poem or a song, as I feel bound to it ’til it is finished and it’s almost like a release when the piece is completed and I am set free to move onto the next piece.
Yes I enjoyed reading your blog . Thank you.
